As many of you know, Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister Co. are two of the most popular clothing stores among preteens, teens and even young adults (ages 12-22) in the country and are known around the world for their hip,Cali-Surfer look. What many people don’t know, is that these stores are guilty of promoting unhealthy eating habits and selling sex to the same teens that are buying their clothing.
Here is a walk-through of what the stores are like:
From the moment you walk into the store, shirtless male models and women in bikinis greet you. The female models are typically 5’8″-6’0″ and between 100-125lbs. The male models are 5’11”-6’2″ and between 140-165 lbs. All of them incredibly tall and thin, and of course with gorgeous smiles and flawless skin. The clothes are all extremely fashionable and are constantly updated for every season. Even the shopping bags have hot, steamy pictures of models on them to help you remember your Abercrombie experience.
That all sounds peachy, but what kind of message is it giving teens? All of the models are too thin. The sizes of the clothing they sell run only to fit people that look like them. And the pictures on the shopping bags can be considered soft-core porn. So in the end, a trip to one of these stores can make a teen feel too overweight when they’re not and expose them to kinds of images that you wouldn’t want them to see otherwise.
